As you venture down Hermit Road (Red Route), you'll encounter breathtaking views of the canyon walls, which are shaped by a unique combination of geological forces. The Abyss, a popular stop along this route, offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness gravity's profound impact on the landscape.

Unlike many other side canyons, which are formed by faults cutting through rock walls and channeling water towards the Colorado River below, Hermits Rest is a rare example of a canyon shaped primarily by gravity's constant pull. Without any fault lines present, very little water runs into the canyon, instead draining southwards away from the rim.

As you stand at The Abyss, gaze down at the stunning vertical drop of 3,000 feet (914 m) below, the longest such drop found anywhere along the South Rim. This natural wonder is a testament to the power of gravity's relentless force on shaping the canyon walls over time.

The Hermit Road (Red Route) operates from 5 am until one hour after sunset, with buses running every 30 minutes during this period. To avoid getting caught in the dark without a ride back to the Village, make sure to arrive at a bus stop at least 30 minutes before sunset.

For those who prefer to drive themselves, Hermit Road is open to private vehicles from December to February when there is no bus service. With its unique blend of canyon views and geological wonders, The Abyss is an essential stop on any visit to Hermits Rest.
